Former Student Honored with Intl. Award

Sister Lorraine Garasu, CSN, the founder of the Nazarene Rehabilitation Center on Bougainville, Papua New Guinea, was honored as the Papua New Guinea winner of the U.S. State Department's "International Women of Courage Award" in March 2009.

The award was presented to Sister Garasu in Buka by the U.S. Ambassador to Papua New Guinea, Ms. Leslie Rowe.  The award was established to pay tribute to women around the world who courageously champion human rights in their communities, and whose personal sacrifice is an inspiration to all people who seek peaceful change.  U.S. Secretary of State Hilary Clinton established the award to honor women around the world who are blazing trails and surmounting obstacles in pusuit of equality and opportunity.

Sister Garasu's community, the Sisters of Nazareth (CSNs), are a congregation of religious women who are native Melanesians in the Papua New Guinea region.  The CSNs and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange often worked together to build the Church and meet the needs of the area.  Sister Lorraine Garasu is a former student of Sister Theresa LaMetterey, CSJ and Sister Lorraine Thibault, CSJ when they were missioned in Papua New Guinea.
