Peace
In 1968, Pope Paul VI called on all people of the world to together celebrate the “Day of Peace” on January 1. Since 1968, each year that day has been celebrated by Catholics and non-Catholics alike and is marked by a special annual peace message from the Holy Father. --United States Conference of Catholic Bishops
In Peace on Earth, Pope John XXIII contends that peace can be established only if the social order set down by God is fully observed. Relying extensively on reason and the natural law tradition, John XXIII sketches a list of rights and duties to be followed by individuals, public authorities, national governments, and the world community. Peace needs to be based on an order “founded on truth, built according to justice, vivified and integrated by charity, and put into practice in freedom.” --Education for Justice Fighting Poverty to Build Peace http://www.usccb.org/sdwp/international/Bulletin%20Insert%202009.doc Nuclear Weapon and Moral Questions: Path to Zero http://www.usccb.org/sdwp/international/nuclearzero.shtml International Day of Peace http://internationaldayofpeace.org/ USCCB-Office of International Justice and Peace http://www.usccb.org/sdwp/international/ Pacem in Terris (Peace on Earth)-- Pope John XXIII, 1963 http://www.osjspm.org/majordoc_pacem_in_terris_official_text.aspx Peace Education http://www.un.org/cyberschoolbus/peace/index.asp Prayer
In this New Year, We look to an end to violence and war. We pray for peace, understanding and reconciliation. In this New Year, We hope for a future where all can have enough. We pray for prophetic voices to speak for the poor and the marginalized. In this New Year, We will feel the pain of those dying from preventable diseases. We pray that antiretrovirals and other medicines can be available to all. In this New Year, We will breathe air and feel alive. We pray to improve our stewardship of God’s creation. In this New Year, We wish to start anew. We pray for wisdom to acknowledge mistakes and move on. In this New Year, We believe that with God’s help, it is possible. We pray for justice to reign and dignity for all people.
